With addiction, I use a Harm Reduction approach. What does a ‘Harm Reduction approach’ to psychotherapy mean?

  • A Harm Reduction approach is unique in that it does not require the client to choose abstinence as a treatment goal. Instead, it encourages the client to explore their unique needs and barriers to change, and come up with their own treatment goals that may involve moderation, abstinence, or anything in between.

  • Harm Reduction psychotherapy uses a biopsychosocial approach to understand and treat the complexities of your substance use, misuse, and addiction. In other words, instead of focusing solely on your addiction, we will also explore other factors, such as symptoms of anxiety and depression, family relationships, medical problems etc. that interact, and underpin your addictive behaviors.

What can I expect in the first session?

I view the first session as a jumping off point towards figuring out if we are a good fit, and determining if, and how, I can best help you. I will ask you some information about what led you to seek treatment at this time, and get more details on topics such as your family and your work.

You will have ample opportunity to ask me any questions you have about how I work and what the treatment process looks like. At the end of the session, if for whatever reason we don’t feel like it’s a good fit, I will give you the referrals you need to find someone who is.

How much do sessions cost? How long do they last? How often will we meet?

Sessions are 50 minutes long and are held on a weekly basis, preferably at the same day/time each week. Weekly treatment is the most effective, and ensures that we stay on top of your treatment goals. Based on the level of support we deem necessary, I will also meet with clients on a more frequent basis.

For a 50-min session, my fee is $200.

I do not accept insurance. If you have a PPO you may be eligible for reimbursement of psychological services and I can provide you with a superbill.

How long will I need to be in treatment?

As you might imagine, this can differ greatly from person to person. For some, change can happen more quickly than they imagined it would. Oftentimes, the thoughts and behaviors we would like to change have been a part of our lives for many years. It can take time to develop insight into why we do what we do, and to develop alternative, healthier ways to manage discomfort.

For those struggling with addiction, relapse is a real part of the recovery process, and can provide us with rich information for how to alter, or add to, your treatment goals. There is no time requirement in therapy, and one thing is for certain, I will always check in with you over the course of treatment to make sure you are getting what you want from our work together.
